What is voice cloning? AI-generated voices in scams
Using AI to generate speech in a real person’s voice, so a call or voice note sounds like a colleague, executive or relative.
How it works
The FBI warns that criminals generate short audio clips containing a loved one’s voice to impersonate a relative in a crisis, and use AI-generated audio to impersonate public figures or personal relations to ask for payments. It also says criminals get into bank accounts using AI-generated audio clips of individuals.
A real example
In May 2025 the FBI reported an ongoing campaign of AI-generated voice messages claiming to come from senior US officials, used to build rapport before sending a malicious link. The FBI says vishers increasingly exploit AI-generated audio to impersonate well-known figures and personal relations.
How to train for it
- Do not treat a recognisable voice as verification.
- Agree a code word or a call-back rule for urgent requests involving money or access.
- Listen for odd tone or word choice, but rely on the process, not your ear.
SecurityRing does not simulate cloned voice calls today; voice-call simulations are coming soon. Its live deepfake video in email simulation trains the same verify-first habit.
